From Gordon Lee’s Press Release:
On Friday, January 18th, Gordon Lee and the Rough Jazz Quartet featuring Alan Jones on drums, freshly repatriated from Europe, the inimitable John Gross on tenor sax, Dan Schulte on bass and pianist-composer Gordon Lee on piano will perform at Jimmy Mak’s in a special reunion concert. $8 cover. See and hear the band that preceded the Alan Jones Sextet and created what some musicians beleive is one of the best jazz cds of the 1990’s, Rough Jazz. They will perform such notorius GLeeful originals as Loss is Freedom and Tobacco Monkey plus some new tunes.
Jax will no longer be having their weekly Wednesday-night jam sessions and Thursday-night “PDX Jazz Singer Showcase” shows. Music will still be at the club on Fridays and Saturdays.
According to an e-mail from Darrell Grant, a new company has taken ownership of LV’s Uptown. For now, they are focusing on renovation and will not be hosting the music series, but there is a possibility that music will return once the new restaurant (Rafati’s) gets up and running - apparently they’ve kept the stage.
Portland’s music scene has been rather cyclical in the past with closures eventually leading to openings - let’s hope that happens again.
