This week, the International Association of Jazz Educators declared bankruptcy.  One of the many unfortunate results of this is the cancellation of the 2009 IAJE conference, which was to be held in Seattle.  The details can be found in an extensive letter at the IAJE website.

Writer Lynn Darroch had a nice piece in Friday’s Oregonian about pianist Dave Brubeck and the band Oregon, who will both be performing in Portland (in different venues of course this Thursday).  You can find the article here.

Dave Brubeck will be playing at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.  Oregon will be performing at the Aladdin.

Normally Dan Balmer holds the regular Monday-night gig at Jimmy Mak’s, but while he’s on tour, a number of groups have taken his place.

This Monday, bassist David Friesen will appear with his trio.

David Valdez has taken over booking at the Pine Street Bistro in downtown Portland.  He’s putting together a great list of artists to play there on Friday and Saturday nights, such as Tim Willcox, Tall Jazz, and Dave Frishberg.  You can find their music calendar here.

This Thursday, the Hollywood Music Center concert series presents the Shelly Rudolph band featuring John Nastos, Clay Giberson, Tim Gilson, and Russ Kleiner.  They will play a variety of material, including John Nastos’s arrangements of standards.  You can find sound and video clips of their last performance at blog.johnnastos.com
