The Upper Left Trio, featuring Clay Giberson, Jeff Leonard, and Charlie Doggett, will be hosting a CD release party on Friday (10/19) at Wilf’s.
The Portland-based trio’s third release further establishes them as a group to watch in coming years. With a deep musical connection, the trio explores through-composed lyrical originals letting the mood and intensity develop organically, always with a strong rhythmic foundation. Though referencing rock, pop and R&B influences, Upper Left Trio’s music is still firmly rooted in the jazz of Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans and Chick Corea. From quiet, introspective ballads to their rhythmically romping anthems, they always sound like themselves. “…the music is fresh and simply stated. Being a fan of both E.S.T. and the Bad Plus, I enjoyed unpacking each tune…” -Radioio.
John Nastos and E4 will be at Jimmy Mak’s on Monday, July 23rd, playing their unique brand of electric jazz and funk. The band features Clay Giberson on keyboards, Drew Shoals on drums, and Damian Erskine on bass. You can check out sound clips from their demo CD as well as their last Jimmy Mak’s show at johnnastos.com.
Dan Balmer and Clay Giberson’s jazz fusion project “Go By Train” has been performing regularly around the Northwest for the past four years. GBT has two albums out - the appropriately named debut album “Go By Train” from 2004, and “Transportation,” the band’s second effort that was released earlier this year. Dan and Clay have been with the project since the beginning while Micah Kassell (who appears on both albums) and Drew Shoals have each spent time holding down the drum chair.
Go By Train shows up one or two Mondays a month at Jimmy Mak’s, where Dan hosts his weekly series. Below, you can find live videos taken at the club, with the band playing material from both albums.
