The Cave Schedule for June 4-7

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

This week’s press release from The Cave:

Wednesday June 4th: NANCY KING INVITATIONAL

This week Nancy invites the prodigious, very talented, and quite young pianist Dan Gaynor. Dan is also what in basketball would be called a “play maker”. He sets up opportunities for other people to score.

Thursday June 5th: ALAN JONES PRESENTS…

his new Quartet of Portland all-stars Randy Porter, Rob Davis and Tom Wakeling. Collectively known as The Cavemen This group will be performing new original music of Alan’s along with not too common and very interesting re-workings from the modern jazz literature.

Friday June 6th: PSU STUDENT COMBO NIGHT

Organized, facilitated and run by world-renowned pianist Darrell Grant and the spectacular composer/arranger Charlie Gray, the jazz program at PSU has become one of the best places to be if you want to learn jazz for real. The students in these combos are exercising their right to use jazz as a vehicle for real creativity.  If the last combo night was any indication, be prepared to hear some exciting, beautiful, inspired and mature music.

Saturday June 7th: ROBERT MOORE and the WILDCATS

Robert Moore is as unique a singer as he is a trumpet and harmonica player. Coming out of Birmingham Alabama and definitely embodying that Southern “thing”, he combines his influences of soul and gospel into his own distinct interpretations of bebop and swinging jazz. In Robert’s approach you hear King Pleasure, Mark Murphy, Mose Allison, & Ella alongside Otis Redding, Roger Miller & classic blues masters. Joining Robert on Saturday will be Dan Gildea on guitar, Dennis Caiazza on bass, and the legendary Ron Steen on drums.

The Cave is located at 636 SW Jackson, under the Green Onion restaurant.

Every Wednesday starting May 7th: NANCY KING INVITATIONAL

Without a doubt one of the world’s greatest jazz singers. Do we collectively have any idea how lucky, how fortunate we are to be living in a time and place where we can hear Nancy sing every Wednesday!?!?!

Don’t get caught sleeping, this may not last forever…

Every Thursday starting May 8th: ALAN JONES PRESENTS…

Best-known for his leadership of the Alan Jones Sextet, which for many listeners defines the essence of Portland jazz with its adventurous, hard-swinging original music, grounded in both jazz tradition and the rugged individualism of the Northwest. Recently returned from Europe, Alan will weekly present a rotating cast of local, national and international musicians.

Friday May 9th: THE DARRELL GRANT QUARTET

Having played with the greatest musicians of the 20thcentury, and freshly inducted into the pdx jazz society hall of fame, Darrell brings music from his new cd release “Truth & Reconciliation”

Saturday May 10th: DAVID FRIESEN - SOLO BASS

A rare opportunity to hear in an intimate Portland setting what you would normally have to travel to the big European Jazz Festival stages to hear…David Freisen playing solo bass! He practically invented the genre. Weird, boring you say? Never in the hands of David!…ok maybe a little weird.
